~Shebee Life~ 2024 Travel Adventures: Exploring St. Augustine, Atlanta, & D.C.-A Photographer's Travel Diary

There’s nothing like traveling to spark creativity, and this year, we hit the road (and skies) to explore some amazing places! From the historic streets of St. Augustine to the vibrant energy of Atlanta and the iconic landmarks of Washington, D.C., each stop gave us fresh inspiration behind the lens. We wandered, we captured, and we found new ways to see the world through our cameras. In this blog, we’re sharing our favorite moments, the hidden gems we discovered, and how these travels are shaping our photography. So, come along—let’s take a trip!

We’ll start off at our first mini trip of the year, with a quick journey to the beaches of St. George Island. We love the short-distance travel to reach the beach, which always gives us an opportunity to relax, reconnect with ourselves, and just have fun with the camera. We enjoyed the early spring day on the beach; observing the wildlife, floating in the ocean, and absorbing the sun’s warm rays. I spent some time taking photos of a nearby bird, and worked on taking some landscapes from interesting angles. Ausbee preferred to try his hand at the macro lens, taking some unique photos of the composition of sand. This was a short but fun trip, with a little creativity mixed in.

Next up, we headed to St. Augustine, Florida, to celebrate our anniversary and take in the historic scenery. We started off at a local park, to give me the opportunity to try out my new binoculars and field guide for bird watching! 😊🦅🦢🦆

While strolling the park, we stumbled upon a neat little maze, which provided a neat perspective for the lens. The maze was not shaped typically and was formed by these lush bushes with small flowers. The bushes were an apparent haven for bumblebees, and Ausbee and I were delighted to find groups of them either gently floating around the bush or settled in to their branches. Ausbee tried his hand at macro photography again, and was able to capture some captivating photos of the busy little bees! You can see the delicate lines on their fragile little wings, along with a visual of how bees carry pollen from flower to flower!

We then ventured further into the city, to stroll the historic parts of town with cobblestoned streets. There were so many cool things to look at, including this gorgeous church we passed as we parked our car to get out and stroll. I loved the symmetry of the columns and ornate archways, and the simple yet elegant color scheme. We stopped to grab a few photos of the church before continuing to head up the street to sight-see.

We found a delightful group of eclectic shops and restaurants, with one in particular catching our eye! The Tipsy Duck Parlor seemed like a fun spot to check out, and it sure did not disappoint when Ausbee and I made our way in! 😁🦆

We unfortunately arrived too late to peruse the shop side of the establishment, where they sold various bath and body care essentials. The store’s wares gave some context to the delightful chaos of the small bar attached, which was rubber duck-themed. 😄 There were ducks GALORE, in every direction we looked! The bar itself was this neat glass contraption that held bubbled water that sped by as we sat (in our duck bottom stools!😅) and reviewed the menu. The little bar was the cutest, and the staff were so sweet, helping us to select a beverage for both of us. Each drink came with a tiny rubber duck that we were allowed to take with us when we’d finished. We gave our duckies a quick float on the cool bar top, and were off once again to the street, to check out a few more shops.

We wrapped the day with a quick dinner at another quirky little spot, the Prohibition Kitchen. Ausbee and I enjoyed some small bites and then got ready to head back home. After a quick stop at the local Bucky’s, because we couldn’t leave town without some beaver nuggets for the road. 😅 This day trip was tons of fun, and gave us so many interesting things to look at and photograph!

Our next little journey took us on a drive to Atlanta, Georgia. We were there to visit friends and celebrate a new life they’d brought into the world, but as usual, Ausbee and I are also going to fit in some time to scratch that creative itch! This trip’s “scratch” was a visit to the Atlanta High Museum of Art! Ausbee gets all my credit for this awesome idea, and boy did we have a BLAST wandering around the huge museum. We even found some cool perspectives for the camera before we entered, so we knew we were in for a creative overload. The museum was 3 floors jampacked with paintings, sculptures, pottery, china, and so much more! Luckily, as we arrived a docent was just beginning their tour, and Ausbee and I excitedly tagged along. We walked through one after another gorgeous and interesting exhibits, as the docent described the various painting styles, mediums, and methods as they applied to various pieces. Ausbee and I took turns snapping photos of various exhibits, pieces, and viewpoints. It was almost overwhelming how many beautiful things there were to look at and appreciate, and Ausbee and I got caught many times by the docent, lagging behind the group after having gotten wrapped up in examining one thing or another.

The final stop in the tour was this incredible interactive piece, made of hammered and polished metal. It was a large domed circle, curved in such a way that permitted a patron to stand in front of the mirror and whisper, then be heard by another patron standing across the room. The auditory element to the piece made it even cooler, but the beauty of the highly polished metal that seemed to fracture images into hundreds or maybe even thousands of pieces, was the real show stopper! Ausbee and I were absolutely fascinated by this piece, and spent a length of time (that I will not admit to) admiring the metal and playing around with the auditory anomaly. 😅

The year’s last big trip was to our nation’s capital, Washington, DC! This time, my other profession took me there for a national conference and Ausbee and I were beyond excited as we boarded our plane to Reagan International Airport. We landed in the busy airport and got a shuttle to our hotel, which was right in the thick of things, and a short distance from the National Mall. We especially loved that the metro station was right below our hotel! So of course, we dropped our bags at the hotel, and took off to explore the city immediately.

We found SO many interesting things in the cities, on that day and everyday of the week we were in town! We did just about everything we could think of; visiting historic sites like the Arlington National Cemetery, walking the streets and stumbling upon cool places like Rewind/Decades Bar, finding hip places to have dinner like the speakeasy, Salt, strolling up and down the multiple floors of the Fashion Centre at Pentagon City and witnessing a religious celebration leading to the Cathedral of St. Matthew, then being overtaken by the beauty of the church! It was so much fun discovering these cool spots and we were snapping pictures and video the whole way. We also enjoy being mini foodies when travelling to new places, so we were excited to find some really good eats and unique dining experiences. In the middle of the week, I was able to reserve some tickets to the national zoo, so Ausbee and I set our course for Smithsonian National Zoo and spent the entire day checking out all the exhibits and animals. The zoo is huge, beautifully designed, and incredibly interesting and educational.

On our final day in the area, we’d reserved tickets to the National Museum of African-American History and Culture, and we got up bright and early to spend as much time as we could exploring the various exhibits. The museum was many things; breathtaking, awe-inspiring, heartbreaking, and overwhelming. The museum was organized in a distinctive way, with all exhibits covering African-American history located on the bottom portion of the museum, accessible only by a large glass elevator that descends next to a wall displaying the centuries counting backwards as you go. You then work your way back up to the main floor of the museum, literally and figuratively travelling through the periods of enslavement, slavery, rebellion, abolishment, Jim Crow, segregation, and civil rights movement. We saw the stories of so many brave and ingenious men and women, with details on how Black people shaped the forming of America. There was so much to look at in that area alone that we didn’t really get to explore the entirety of the African-American culture area, which was the upper two floors of the museum. We did check out the room with all the musical contributions from African American culture, and were delighted with the many displays.

Our final stop, before we headed back to the airport for our flight back to Tallahassee, was a cool little restaurant with interesting flavor combinations called The Unconventional Diner. Ausbee and I practiced our food photography skills and had some tasty eats on their patio, then headed back to Reagan International to return home after this huge adventure.

2024 took us on some amazing adventures, and we can’t wait to see what’s in store next year!

✌🏾❤️☺️
