Engagement Sessions

Photographers guide to:

So, you’re wrapped up in the bliss of your relationship, and are thinking of popping the question in a big way. Or, maybe you’re excited, newly-engaged fiancés, eager to show off your love to friends and family. Wither way, capturing this moment with photos is a must, but what comes next? We know from experience, those exciting days can feel like an absolute whirlwind! That’s why we’ve put together a short guide to help make your engagement session as romantic and memorable as you’ve always dreamed.

From daydreams to details

Step one is always preparation! A big part of this is deciding on a theme that reflects who you are as a couple. If the session is the actual proposal, consider whether you’ll invite others, as the group size can guide our location choice. For a session that is a post-engagement announcement, think about places and activities that hold special meaning for both. Almost any location or activity can work, and the more creative you get, the more of your personalities will shine through. Sharing ideas with your photographer is highly recommended to help illustrate your vision and ensure they bring the right gear and materials. Pinterest is a fantastic resource for shoot and pose inspiration, and most photographers will be thrilled when you arrive with a mood board! Also, don’t forget to plan out your wardrobe, accessories, and any potential props. Discuss color schemes and fabrics with your photographer, as they can impact how lighting is set up. And don’t be afraid to suggest something bold! Whether it’s a playful idea like a pillow fight or a more adventurous concept- like you and your fiancé in a fencing duel-your photographer wants to bring your vision to life. So, en garde!

…and Pose!

Another key aspect of prepping for your session is considering the visuals. If your shoot involves the actual proposal, think about how the scene will be framed—what will be in view along with you and your significant other—so your photographer can capture the most romantic and beautiful moments. For example, if it's a surprise proposal, plan where your partner will enter so their reaction can be caught when they see the surprise. If you're incorporating something extra, like fireworks, sparklers, or confetti, make sure your photographer knows when and where these elements will happen so they can position themselves to capture the excitement.

For a proposal announcement session, framing is just as important, but with a different focus. You might want to consider specific poses or ideas that will bring out your connection as a couple. Pinterest is still a fantastic resource for gathering ideas, and having some poses in mind will help you feel more confident on the day of the session. But don’t worry if you haven’t planned out all the details—most photographers are pros at guiding you through poses, so just relax and enjoy the moment!

Ready, Set, Snap!

Now that you've planned everything, gathered your outfits and props, and aligned with your photographer, it’s time to prep for the big day. Start by packing your outfits the night before, so you have time to iron, fold, and fluff without rushing. It’s also smart to bring a small bag with essentials like chapstick, touch-up makeup, hand wipes, lotion, and a towel for any unexpected sweating. These little things can feel like lifesavers in the moment! If your session is outdoors, think about your footwear—you may need to walk a lot, so easy on-and-off shoes for you and your partner will be a huge help.
If you’re planning to pop the question during the shoot, be sure to pack the ring securely, and consider having it cleaned and shined before the big event. For surprise proposals, don’t forget to plan some grooming for your partner to make sure they feel their best. This could mean getting their hair done or picking an outfit they love. And definitely don’t overlook their nails—there will be plenty of attention on their hands!

On the day of, pack essentials to stay comfortable, prepare your walking shoes, and if you’re planning a proposal, make sure everything from the ring to your partner’s grooming is in order.
